The Nigerian music community has been plunged into deep mourning.

The death of celebrated live-band leader, Akinloye Tofowomo, has been confirmed. He was widely known by his stage name, Akiin Shuga.

The founder of the renowned Shuga Band passed away on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada. He was 50 years old.

A Life Defined by Resilience and Purpose

Akiin Shuga’s life story is viewed as one of extraordinary purpose and perseverance. He was born on January 6, 1975, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State. He was afflicted by polio at the age of five. Nevertheless, physical challenges were successfully defied by him.

He became one of Nigeria’s most respected music entrepreneurs and live performers. His remarkable journey is seen as mirroring the modern revival of live music as a core part of Nigerian culture.

The Shuga Band was launched by him in 1998. The group was started small, performing initially at Pintos in Ikeja, Lagos. Over time, the ensemble was expanded into a formidable 14-member collective.

The band became widely known for its high-energy, electrifying performances. These were frequently requested at prestigious state functions, corporate gatherings, and weddings.

His company, Shuga Entertainment, was established as a benchmark for excellence. It was widely regarded as a model for combining artistic mastery with strict business professionalism in the live performance industry.

Furthermore, Akiin Shuga was chosen to serve as the founding president of the Association of Music Band Owners of Nigeria. There, significant efforts were made by him to elevate industry standards and champion fair treatment for professional musicians.

Emotional Tribute Shared by Family

A statement was released on Monday by Akiin Shuga’s family. An emotional tribute to his lasting legacy was paid by them. He was described as an enduring presence in the music world.

“Akinloye Tofowomo was more than a musician; he was a custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance.”

The statement highlighted his three decades of influence. “He redefined what it meant to lead a band with grace, mastery, and purpose,” it explained. To countless fans globally, he was regarded as “an inspiration and an institution: a true king in his art.”

The grieving family has humbly requested privacy. “We wish for the space to find closure and to honour his life in the intimacy of loved ones and cherished memories,” the statement concluded.

Consequently, memorial information, including dates and arrangements, will be communicated later. The family also conveyed their sincere appreciation for the prayers and kind words pouring in, assuring the public that his legacy will continue through Shuga Band and Shuga Entertainment.
