Lagos Fashion Week 2021 officially kicked off today, marking its return with a renewed focus on sustainability. The annual event, which has become a major platform for African fashion, will runLagos Fashion Week 2021 from October 27 to October 30, 2021, at the Federal Palace Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos. Designers from across Africa have gathered to showcase collections that highlight eco-conscious fashion, innovative designs, and traditional craftsmanship.

This year’s edition is themed “The Future of Fashion,” with an emphasis on sustainability in the African fashion industry. In light of growing global concerns about environmental impact, many designers featured collections made from upcycled fabrics, natural dyes, and locally sourced materials. Some designers also took the opportunity to raise awareness about slow fashion, encouraging consumers to invest in high-quality, long-lasting garments instead of mass-produced items.

Founder of Lagos Fashion Week, Omoyemi Akerele, emphasized the importance of sustainability during her opening remarks. She stated, “Sustainability is no longer a choice but a necessity. The future of African fashion lies in our ability to innovate and protect the environment while celebrating our rich cultural heritage.”

Highlights of the first day included runway shows from renowned Nigerian designers such as Lisa Folawiyo, Kenneth Ize, and Nkwo, all of whom integrated eco-friendly practices into their collections. Several emerging designers also took the stage, presenting fresh ideas for sustainable fashion in Africa.

In addition to the runway shows, Lagos Fashion Week 2021 featured panel discussions, workshops, and exhibitions aimed at promoting sustainable practices. Topics included the circular economy, sustainable textile production, and how African designers can lead the way in responsible fashion. These discussions featured industry experts, environmental activists, and designers who shared insights on how the fashion industry can reduce its carbon footprint.

Despite challenges brought by the global pandemic, the event maintained a strong physical presence with a limited audience while also providing virtual access to viewers worldwide via live streams. This hybrid approach ensured that Lagos Fashion Week continued to reach a global audience while adhering to health and safety protocols.

Lagos Fashion Week 2021 continues to be a beacon of innovation, creativity, and sustainability, reaffirming its position as a driving force in African fashion and a key player in the global conversation on responsible fashion.
