CHAN 2024

The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) has finally reached the knockout stage, with the quarter-finals kicking off on Friday, August 22.

The tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, has been full of excitement and unexpected results. In a historic turn, all three co-hosts advanced to the last eight, each finishing top of their groups. This achievement highlights the growing strength of East African football on the continental stage.

Friday’s Quarter-Final Fixtures

The action begins on Friday with two crucial matches.

  • Kenya vs. Madagascar (Nairobi): Group A winners Kenya will face Madagascar in front of a passionate home crowd. The Harambee Stars, impressive in the group stage, will look to use their home advantage to push into the semi-finals.
  • Tanzania vs. Morocco (Dar-es-Salaam): Group B winners Tanzania will battle defending champions Morocco. The Taifa Stars have shown consistency, but Morocco’s experience makes them a formidable opponent.

Saturday’s Quarter-Final Fixtures

On Saturday, the spotlight shifts to Zanzibar and Kampala.

  • Sudan vs. Algeria (Amaan Stadium, Zanzibar): Sudan and Algeria will clash in a contest expected to be one of the tightest of the round. Both teams displayed resilience in the group stage.
  • Uganda vs. Senegal (Kampala): Uganda’s Cranes will rely on strong home support to overcome Senegal. However, the Teranga Lions bring physicality and experience that could tilt the match in their favor.

Road to the Semi-Finals and Grand Final

The winners of the four quarter-final ties will progress to the semi-finals next Tuesday and Wednesday. From there, only two teams will book a place in the grand final on Saturday, August 30, at Nairobi’s iconic Kasarani Stadium. Organizers expect a full house and millions of viewers across the continent for the showdown.

East Africa’s Breakthrough Moment

The progress of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda has been hailed as a breakthrough for East African football. For years, North and West African teams dominated CHAN, but this tournament signals a potential power shift.

With three host nations still in the competition, East African fans are daring to dream of lifting the CHAN trophy on home soil.
