A family celebration turned into a tragedy overnight. Two residential buildings collapsed in the Moroccan city of Fez. Officials confirmed at least 22 people died.
The disaster occurred late Tuesday in the Al-Mustaqbal neighborhood. This area is just weeks away from hosting major international sporting events.
Rescuers worked frantically through the morning. They pulled 16 survivors from the twisted concrete and steel.
Reports suggest one building was hosting a newborn baby celebration, known as an Aqiqah. The structure gave way suddenly. The impact caused the adjacent building to crumble as well.
A City of Contrasts
Fez is currently under the global spotlight. It is Morocco’s third-largest city. It is preparing to host matches for this month’s Africa Cup of Nations. It will also be a venue for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
However, these glossy preparations contrast sharply with reality. The city’s poorer districts suffer from neglect.
Neighborhoods like Al-Mustaqbal face serious infrastructure issues. Residents often report deteriorating foundations. Unfortunately, enforcement of safety codes remains inconsistent.
Illegal Construction Suspected
An official investigation is underway. However, preliminary findings point to structural violations.
Sources close to the inquiry suggest illegal expansion. It is believed the original permits authorized only two stories. Yet, the structures had been built up to four floors.
This additional weight likely contributed to the collapse. Furthermore, poor construction materials are common in these “self-construction” zones.
A Recurring Nightmare
This is not an isolated incident. Fez is still reeling from a similar disaster in May. That collapse claimed 10 lives.
Reports indicate that the previous building was flagged for evacuation. However, it remained inhabited. This pattern highlights the city’s struggle with rapid urbanization and housing shortages.
Public anger is rising. Earlier this year, protests swept across Morocco. Demonstrators questioned the government’s priorities. They argue that officials prioritize sports stadiums over housing safety and healthcare.
Rescue Operations Continue
Emergency services have evacuated the surrounding area. They want to prevent further casualties.
Teams are using heavy machinery and hand tools to sift through debris. Meanwhile, families wait anxiously for news of the missing.
Residents are demanding accountability. Touria, a neighbor who rushed to the scene, spoke to reporters.
“We want the authorities to inspect the other buildings, so that there is no repetition of what has happened,” she demanded.
