Captain Ibrahim Traore, the military leader of Burkina Faso, has officially launched construction on the nation’s first expressway.
The massive project will span approximately 332 km. It will connect the capital, Ouagadougou, with the southwestern hub of Bobo Dioulasso.
Traore inaugurated the project near the capital city. This marks a major milestone for the country’s infrastructure. Because this is the nation’s first high-speed road, it is expected to drastically modernize travel within the region.
Funding Through the “Faso Mebo” Initiative
The expressway is a central part of the Faso Mebo initiative. This is an ambitious plan designed by the current administration to modernize the Sahelian nation. Interestingly, the government is not relying on foreign loans for this project. Instead, they are using locally generated funds.
Key financial details include:
- Total Investment: The 2026 state budget has earmarked at least $357 million for the project.
- Economic Self-Reliance: Authorities confirmed that the funding comes from domestic revenue.
Boosting Trade and Regional Connectivity
Once completed, the highway will serve as a vital trade link for the landlocked country. It will facilitate faster traffic flow along a major economic corridor. This corridor connects the Sahel to several critical West African ports.
The expressway will improve access to ports in:
- Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire)
- Lomé (Togo)
- Tema (Ghana)
- Cotonou (Benin)
By improving these links, Burkina Faso aims to reduce transport costs and increase the efficiency of international trade.
