Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, has strongly rebuked opposition figure Issa Tchiroma Bakary’s premature declaration of winning the presidential election, accusing him of scheming to incite chaos.
In a firm public statement, Atanga Nji labeled Tchiroma’s actions as a deliberate plot to destabilize the country through coordinated efforts both domestically and internationally.
Accusations of Electoral Interference
Atanga Nji described Tchiroma’s move as a “sinister scheme” orchestrated with hidden allies to provoke widespread disorder. “This misguided contender is pushing a calculated agenda to ignite turmoil across Cameroon,” he declared.
Last week, the minister had cautioned that any unsanctioned announcements of election outcomes would constitute a grave offense, emphasizing that only the nation’s Constitutional Council holds the authority to certify results.
Opposition’s Bold Announcement
Early Tuesday, following the October 12 presidential vote, Tchiroma Bakary, now in his late seventies, proclaimed himself the victor.
He called on long-serving President Paul Biya, who has governed for over four decades, to gracefully step aside.
Tchiroma’s campaign, launched after leaving his roles as government spokesperson and employment minister under Biya, garnered significant support from opposition alliances and community organizations, drawing enthusiastic crowds to rallies.
Biya’s Enduring Leadership
President Biya has steered Cameroon since 1982, spanning nearly half a century and marking him as the second leader since the country’s 1960 independence from France.
His extended tenure has shaped the nation’s political landscape, though it remains a point of contention amid calls for change.
Legal Framework for Results
Under Cameroon’s electoral regulations, the Constitutional Council must validate the election outcomes within 15 days of voting.
This process ensures transparency and adherence to the law, preventing premature claims that could undermine public trust.
Broader Context of the Dispute
The clash highlights ongoing tensions in Cameroon’s political arena, where opposition voices push for reform against established authority.
Tchiroma’s challenge, backed by a broad coalition, signals a growing demand for accountability, but the government’s firm stance underscores its commitment to orderly processes.
As the nation awaits the official verdict, the incident has heightened scrutiny on the electoral system’s integrity.
