DRC Leader Calls Congo Crisis a Genocide at UN

DRC

At the 2025 UN General Assembly, DRC President Félix Tshisekedi called violence in eastern Congo a “silent genocide.” He urged world leaders to act fast to stop the growing crisis.

Steps for Peace

Tshisekedi listed key demands: Rwanda must pull out troops, stop backing M23 rebels, and let DRC reclaim occupied areas.

“These are must-haves for peace,” he said firmly.

Long-Running Conflict

For over 30 years, mineral-rich eastern DRC has faced unrest. Since 2021, M23’s comeback, reportedly supported by Rwanda, has worsened violence. UN reports hint at war crimes by all parties.

Push for Justice

Tshisekedi asked the UN to label the crisis a genocide and back DRC’s fight for justice.

“Words won’t do—help us bring peace to Africa’s core,” he told leaders.

Stop Illegal Trade

He demanded sanctions on war criminals and those profiting from illegal mineral trade.

“These resources have fueled war and pain for decades,” he said.

Global Action Needed

Tshisekedi’s speech calls for worldwide help to end violence, stop illegal trade, and bring stability to DRC.
