Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, has secured a significant diplomatic victory.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Council of Ministers has endorsed him as the region’s sole candidate for the African Union (AU) chairmanship in 2027.
The council finalized the decision on Friday. This occurred during their 95th ordinary session held in Abuja, Nigeria.
A Unanimous Choice
According to the council, the choice of Mahama reflects Ghana’s pivotal role. They described Ghana as “an important ECOWAS member state” that contributes substantially to the organization’s international standing.
Ministers emphasized the need for a united front. This strategy aims to help ECOWAS maintain and increase its presence in regional and international organizations.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Sam Ablakwa, confirmed the development. He noted that the decision was unanimous.
“ECOWAS Council of Ministers meeting in Abuja, Nigeria has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama… as the sole candidate from ECOWAS for Chairperson of the African Union,” Ablakwa stated.
He added that the Authority of Heads of State and Government is expected to formally adopt the declaration on Sunday.
“Ghana is exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the confidence and support for our beloved visionary and Pan-African President,” Ablakwa noted.
The Path to Leadership
The chairmanship of the African Union rotates among the continent’s five regions.
- Current Leadership: Southern Africa currently holds the position. This follows the election of Angolan President João Gonçalves Lourenço earlier this year.
- Previous Leadership: Before Lourenço, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani held the role.
- West Africa’s Turn: The leadership baton passes to West Africa in 2027.
Strategic Timing
The final election involves a vote by all AU member states. To emerge victorious, a candidate requires a two-thirds majority.
However, ECOWAS is moving early to consolidate support. By selecting Mahama well in advance, the regional bloc aims to strengthen coordination.
This early move boosts the Ghanaian President’s profile across the continent, ensuring a unified West African bid for the prestigious role.
