During a high-level video conference on Tuesday, French Finance Minister Roland Lescure called on G7 nations to prioritize collective dialogue and mutual trust. As France begins its G7 presidency, Lescure emphasized that the group’s strength relies on shared solutions rather than isolated, unilateral actions.
This meeting occurred during a period of heightened diplomatic friction. Currently, the Trump administration is reviving threats of increased tariffs on European exports. Furthermore, Washington has expressed a renewed interest in acquiring Greenland, adding to the regional tension.
France’s G7 Presidency: Three Strategic Pillars
As France takes the helm of the Group of Seven this year, the Finance Ministry has outlined a clear roadmap. This plan focuses on global stability and resource security through three main priorities:
- Securing Rare Earth Elements: The G7 will work to protect the supply chains of critical minerals. These materials are essential for modern technology and the green energy transition.
- Sustaining Support for Ukraine: France aims to ensure continued financial and strategic backing for the nation remains a top priority.
- Balancing the Global Economy: The agenda includes implementing measures to reduce significant macro-economic imbalances worldwide.
Dialogue vs. Unilateralism
Lescure’s remarks served as a direct response to recent policy shifts from Washington. He stressed that international relations must remain anchored in sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“Lescure stressed the importance of prioritizing dialogue and seeking common solutions rather than unilateral measures,” the French Finance Ministry stated following the meeting.
Additionally, the Minister underlined that for the G7 to remain an effective body, members must adhere to common principles. He noted that respect for one another’s borders and economic autonomy is vital for long-term cooperation.
