Local farmers launched a dawn protest on Friday morning outside President Emmanuel Macron’s residence. Despite a recent delay in the EU-Mercosur trade pact, agricultural workers remain steadfast in their opposition.
The demonstration took place in the seaside town of Le Touquet. Approximately 50 participants arrived at the seafront at 5:30 a.m., accompanied by 30 tractors. While police monitored the scene, the gathering remained peaceful throughout the morning.
Demanding a Total Cancellation
This protest follows a massive rally in Brussels. Just 24 hours earlier, thousands of European farmers voiced similar concerns regarding the trade deal. Although the European Commission postponed the final signing until January 2026, French unions argue that a simple delay is insufficient.
Benoît Thilliez, a representative of the FDSEA Hauts-de-France, explained the group’s stance clearly:
“Yesterday, more than 10,000 of our colleagues demonstrated in Brussels. They obtained a one-month reprieve… but what we want is for it to be abandoned completely.”
Consequently, the unions believe that in the current geopolitical climate, the agreement has no reason to exist.
Concerns Over “Unfair” Competition
The core of the farmers’ frustration lies in the standards of imported goods. Specifically, they fear the EU-Mercosur deal will flood the market with products that ignore strict European environmental and safety regulations.
Current Pressures on French Agriculture
Farmers are currently facing several significant challenges, including:
- Reduced Subsidies: Recent cuts to EU agricultural funding have hurt local margins.
- Environmental Mandates: New carbon border adjustments and “green” regulations increase operational costs.
- Economic Competition: Imported goods often lack the high safety standards required of French producers.
Support for the movement is growing at a local level. Interestingly, the Mayor of Le Touquet has publicly sided with the farmers. This adds further pressure on the French government to veto the agreement permanently.
