President Tinubu’s aide, Bayo Onanuga, announced this via a statement on X.

Council Backs Nomination

During a Presidential Villa meeting, Tinubu presented Amupitan’s nomination. The council unanimously supported the INEC chairman appointment.

Kogi Governor Ahmed Ododo praised Amupitan’s integrity.

Replacing Yakubu

Amupitan succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose 10-year tenure ended in October 2025.

The INEC chairman appointment marks a shift, with Amupitan being the first North-Central nominee.

Current Responsibilities

Amupitan is Pro-Chancellor at Joseph Ayo Babalola University and serves on boards like the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.

These roles enhance his INEC chairman appointment profile.

Next Steps for Approval

Tinubu will forward Amupitan’s name to the Senate for screening, per constitutional requirements.

This step finalizes the INEC chairman appointment process, ensuring legal compliance.

Regional Significance

As the first North-Central INEC chair, Amupitan brings fresh perspective. His legal expertise and leadership are expected to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system in 2025.

Path Forward

The INEC chairman appointment positions Amupitan to lead with integrity.
