Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed on Wednesday that a fatal explosion in Moscow has claimed the lives of two police officers.
The incident occurred during the early hours of the morning. It happened when the officers attempted to intercept a suspicious individual near their service vehicle.
According to a statement from the committee, an “explosive device was triggered” just as the officers approached the suspect. The Investigative Committee, which handles high-profile criminal cases, is currently leading the probe into the blast.
Proximity to High-Profile Military Assassination
The blast took place very close to the site where a high-ranking Russian military official was killed just 48 hours earlier. On Monday, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was assassinated in a similar fashion. An explosive device detonated beneath his parked car.
General Sarvarov served as the head of the Russian General Staff’s training department. Consequently, authorities are now investigating potential links between the two attacks. They are specifically looking at the geographic proximity and the similar use of explosives.
Investigation and Scene Security
Forensic teams and investigators have been deployed to the area to conduct a thorough analysis. The Investigative Committee noted that the current focus includes several key areas:
- Explosive Examinations: Experts are analyzing device remnants to determine their origin and chemical composition.
- Forensic Analysis: Teams are conducting medical examinations and gathering physical evidence from the site.
- Security Cordon: Police have cordoned off large sections of the area and maintain a heavy presence.
Witnesses reported hearing the explosion at approximately 1:30 am local time (22:30 GMT Tuesday). Footage from the scene showed forensic specialists working under floodlights to process evidence before daybreak.
Context: Rising Attacks on Russian Officials
Since early 2022, there has been a sharp increase in targeted attacks against Russian military and pro-Kremlin figures. These incidents have occurred both within Russian borders and in occupied territories.
While Kyiv has claimed responsibility for some operations targeting military personnel, they have not commented on this week’s events. There has been no statement regarding General Sarvarov’s death or the blast that killed the two officers.
