New Party Dominates Gabon’s Legislative Vote

Gabon's

The Democratic Union of Builders (UDB), founded by President Brice Oligui Nguema, secured 55 of 145 National Assembly seats in the first round of Gabon’s legislative elections on September 30, 2025.

Post-Coup Shift

This vote, the first since a 2023 coup ended the Bongo family’s 50-year rule, saw the former ruling party, PDG, win only three seats. Both parties shared four seats on joint tickets.

Second Round Ahead

A runoff on October 11 will decide 77 remaining constituencies, primarily contested between UDB and PDG, shaping the final parliamentary lineup.

New Political System

Gabon adopted a presidential system after Oligui Nguema’s April 2025 election win, enabled by a debated electoral code allowing military candidates, including himself, to run.

Limited Legislative Power

Though the parliament’s authority is restricted, the election tests Gabon’s shift toward constitutional governance following the coup.

Why It Matters

The UDB’s strong showing signals a political realignment, reflecting public support for Oligui Nguema’s leadership post-Bongo era.

What’s Next

The October 11 runoff will finalize the National Assembly’s composition, determining the trajectory of Gabon’s democratic transition in 2025.
