TYRE

The Nasarawa State Police Command has announced a total ban on burning used tyres during New Year crossover activities. Commissioner of Police Shetima Mohammed issued this directive on Tuesday, December 30, 2025. This measure aims to ensure a safe and orderly transition into the new year for all residents across the state.

SP Ramhan Nansel, the State Police Public Relations Officer, released the official statement in Lafia. Furthermore, the Commissioner has ordered all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to enforce this ban strictly.

Why the Ban is Necessary

The police leadership highlighted several critical reasons for this prohibition. These specific measures are designed to protect both the residents and the environment:

  • Infrastructure Protection: Burning tyres damages and defaces public and private roads and property.
  • Environmental Safety: Toxic smoke from rubber fires causes significant air pollution.
  • Traffic Management: Keeping roads clear of fires and debris ensures the free flow of vehicles.
  • Public Security: The ban prevents disorderly conduct and maintains general safety during large gatherings.

Instructions for Vulcanizers and Parents

To prevent unauthorized access to these materials, the Commissioner issued specific guidelines for local business owners and families:

  1. Vulcanizers: All tyre repair business owners must properly dispose of used tyres. Alternatively, they should secure them at the close of each workday. This prevents individuals from using them for illegal fires.
  2. Parents and Guardians: Families are urged to warn their children against participating in tyre burning. The police warned that any person caught will face immediate arrest and prosecution in accordance with the law.

A Commitment to Public Peace

Commissioner Mohammed reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to a peaceful and hitch-free New Year. Consequently, the police have increased patrols and surveillance across Nasarawa State to deter criminal activities and respond to emergencies.

Residents are encouraged to celebrate responsibly. Furthermore, the public should promptly report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines.
