OSINBAJO

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed former Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to head its Election Observation Mission for Côte d’Ivoire’s presidential election on October 25, 2025.

Running from October 19 to 29, the mission follows ECOWAS’s rules for promoting fair and peaceful voting. Osinbajo will lead a group of respected West African leaders to work with local officials, ensuring an open and credible process. They’ll also team up with other observers to check the election’s fairness.

Why This Election Matters

Côte d’Ivoire’s vote is a big moment for West Africa, where countries are working to strengthen democracy. Past elections in the nation have sparked unrest, so ECOWAS aims to keep things calm.

Osinbajo’s team will watch polling stations, voter participation, and rule-following to ensure transparency. His job includes meeting with government, election officials, and community groups to build trust. By sharing notes with other observers, the mission will give a full picture of the vote’s conduct.

Osinbajo’s Role and Experience

Osinbajo’s selection reflects his strong reputation as a lawyer and leader. As Nigeria’s Vice President from 2015 to 2023, he handled complex political issues, making him ideal for this role.

His leadership will help guide Côte d’Ivoire toward a smooth election, reducing the chance of disputes. ECOWAS sees him as key to setting a high standard for fair elections across the region.

Supporting Regional Stability

ECOWAS is committed to peace and reliable elections in West Africa, especially as nations face economic and political challenges. Recent elections in the region have sometimes led to conflicts, so this mission aims to prevent that.

Starting days before the vote, it will check on campaign fairness and voter education to catch problems early. This approach builds confidence among voters and candidates, supporting a stable process.

Looking to the Future

Osinbajo’s mission will create a report on the election, which could shape how ECOWAS supports democracy moving forward.

His work will help Côte d’Ivoire hold a fair vote, boosting trust in the region. Nigeria’s influence grows through leaders like Osinbajo, who strengthen ECOWAS’s goals.

As the world watches, a peaceful election could inspire stronger democratic values across West Africa, paving the way for progress.
