Oversabi Aunty box office

Nollywood has a new box office titan, and it has arrived with record-breaking force.

As of January 26, 2026, the comedy blockbuster Oversabi Aunty has officially joined the exclusive ₦1 billion club. In a historic twist, the film is now the first-ever directorial debut in the Nigerian film industry to cross this ten-figure threshold.

This massive commercial victory cements the movie’s status as the fourth highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time. It now sits proudly on the leaderboard just behind established juggernauts Behind The Scenes, Everybody Loves Jenifa, and A Tribe Called Judah.

Oversabi Aunty Box Office Dominance

The numbers are staggering. According to official figures released by distributor FilmOne Entertainment, the film has raked in a total of ₦1,017,201,953 across cinemas in West Africa.

However, the speed of this ascent is just as impressive as the final tally. Released on December 19, 2025, the movie wasted no time capturing the public’s attention. Remarkable data shows that within a mere 18 days of hitting the big screen, it had already surged past the ₦711 million mark.

Consequently, this performance signals a significant shift in the industry, proving that fresh directorial voices can compete with veteran filmmakers at the highest commercial levels.

Toyin Abraham’s Historic Pivot

While the revenue is headline-grabbing, the creative victory belongs to Toyin Abraham.

Known affectionately by fans as “World Best,” Abraham starred in and directed the film. She plays Toun, a character defined by her “oversabi” nature—a self-righteous church usher who inserts herself into everyone’s business.

The character’s chaotic relatability clearly struck a nerve. Yet, the real story here is Abraham’s successful transition from screen star to elite director. Steering a debut project to billion-naira success is unprecedented territory in Nollywood.

Industry and Fan Reactions

The announcement has sparked a wave of digital applause across social media platforms.

FilmOne Entertainment celebrated the audience’s role in the achievement on Instagram.

“West Africa, you showed up in an Oversabi way,” the distributor stated. “This win is a major testament to the growth of our industry.”

Meanwhile, peers and fans have been quick to laud the achievement. Actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington reacted with a celebratory, “Yassssss ????.”

Fans were equally vocal about the scale of the accomplishment.

“First directorial debut to hit a billion… that is beyond amazing!” commented user @stunnurse1.

Similarly, @tung_styn noted:

“This is beyond amazing and extraordinary… God bless her and her supporters.”

With the ₦1 billion barrier broken, Oversabi Aunty has not just entertained audiences; it has reset the standard for what is possible for first-time directors in African cinema.
