A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, late Monday. The incident immediately triggered a hostile reaction and a high-security alert from the Alliance of Sahel States.
Details of the Emergency
The NAF plane, which was en route to Portugal, diverted to the nearest airfield in Burkina Faso due to an unspecified in-flight emergency.
NAF spokesman Ehimen Ejodame confirmed the landing was conducted safely and in line with standard international safety procedures. He noted that the two crew members and nine passengers were safe and received cordial treatment from the host authorities.
Sahel Alliance on Maximum Alert
The Alliance of Sahel States (comprising Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso) swiftly condemned the landing as a violation of Burkina Faso’s airspace. The Alliance subsequently placed its air and anti-air defenses on maximum alert.
General Assimi Goita, the leader of Mali’s military junta, issued a strong warning. The Alliance authorized its forces “to neutralize any aircraft that violates the confederation’s airspace”.
Context of Deepening Regional Tensions
This confrontation underscores the severely strained security relations between the Alliance nations and Nigeria:
- ECOWAS Rift: Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger previously withdrew from the regional bloc ECOWAS. They accuse the bloc, of which Nigeria is a leading member, of imposing inhumane sanctions.
- Benin Intervention: The tension is exacerbated by Nigeria’s recent military action. The NAF conducted airstrikes to help reverse a coup attempt in neighboring Benin, which shares a border with Burkina Faso.
The incident highlights the volatile and fragile security dynamics currently defining West Africa.
