On September 21, 2025, Silver-Cross Hospitals and Foundation, Abuja, held free medical screenings at the Arts and Culture Complex, Area 10, to mark World Alzheimer’s Day.

Partnering with NaidCARE, the National Orientation Agency, and the Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria, the event provided specialized medications to 200 seniors.

Commitment to Community Health

Dr. Patrick Ezie, CEO of Silver-Cross, said the initiative supports universal healthcare access. “We reach underserved communities with care, education, and relief,” he told reporters.

“Our mission is to meet people where they are, especially the elderly facing health challenges.”

Focus on Alzheimer’s Awareness

The screenings included eye, ear, dental, and general consultations for those 65 and older.

Ezie noted that Alzheimer’s, a brain disorder affecting memory and behavior, is often misunderstood in Nigeria.

“Many attribute symptoms to spiritual causes, leading to stigma,” he said, urging compassion to ease patients’ struggles.

Calls for Better Care

Eze Ajoku, COSROPIN’s National Coordinator, pushed for dedicated elderly care units offering counseling and priority treatment.

He called on government and private groups to ramp up Alzheimer’s education efforts to improve support for older adults.

Positive Event Feedback

Dr. Olubanjo Akerele, NaidCARE’s medical lead, praised the event’s turnout and services. “Society must stop stigmatizing seniors,” he said.

“Caring for them is everyone’s duty.” The program included health talks, informational materials, and caregiver discussions.

Annual Awareness Drive

World Alzheimer’s Day, observed yearly on September 21, aims to raise awareness and combat stigma around dementia-related conditions, aligning with Silver-Cross’s goals.
