Australian authorities have confirmed that the deadly mass shooting at a Bondi Beach Hanukkah celebration was a terrorist attack.
Police state the violence, which left 15 people dead, was inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS).
Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett made the official announcement on Tuesday. This marks the first public confirmation of the ideological motivation behind Sunday’s massacre.
The Suspects
The attackers have been identified as a father and son, aged 50 and 24.
According to law enforcement, the 50-year-old father was shot dead at the scene. His son survived the encounter. He is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital under heavy police guard.
Police Commissioner for New South Wales, Mal Lanyon, revealed a potential international link. The pair had traveled to the Philippines last month. Investigators are now probing their specific movements to determine if the trip was connected to the attack planning.
Explosives and Flags Found
Evidence recovered from the scene points to clear premeditation.
Commissioner Lanyon confirmed that police seized a vehicle registered to the younger suspect. Inside the car, officers discovered improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
“I also confirm that it contained two homemade ISIS flags,” Lanyon stated during the press conference.
The Victims and a Hero
The attack has devastated the local community. The 15 victims ranged in age from 10 to 87 years old. They had gathered at Australia’s most famous beach to celebrate the Jewish festival of lights.
Currently, 25 people remain in hospitals. Of those, 10 are in critical condition, and three are children being treated in a specialist pediatric ward.
Amid the tragedy, stories of bravery have emerged. Video footage appears to show a man tackling and disarming one of the assailants. He then pointed the weapon at the attacker before setting it safely on the ground.
Public Anger and Legal Reform
As details emerge, public anger is growing. Questions are mounting regarding how the suspects planned such an attack undetected. Many are also asking whether sufficient protection was provided to Australian Jews amid rising antisemitism.
In response, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and state leaders have pledged action. They intend to tighten the nation’s already strict gun laws.
These changes are expected to be the most sweeping reforms since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996. Since that historic legislation, mass shootings in Australia have been rare.
