Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, is in mourning following the sudden death of Timilehin Adetoye Toromade. The high-achieving 18-year-old was a Part Three student in the Department of Medicine and Surgery. Reports indicate that he passed away in his sleep during the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
According to Abiodun Olarewaju, the University’s Public Relations Officer, Timilehin was active just hours before the tragedy. Specifically, witnesses noted that he opened the door for a roommate around 2:00 AM. Consequently, officials believe he passed away shortly after that time.
University Leadership Expresses Deep Sorrow
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, spoke on behalf of the University Council and the entire campus community. He described the loss as a tragedy that defies words. Furthermore, he lamented the loss of a young man who had dedicated himself to the rigors of medical training to serve humanity.
“The loss of a life so full of promise and potential is deeply painful,” Professor Bamire stated. “The entire University is united in grief over the passing of a student who aspired to heal others.”
Investigations and Support Measures
The University Management is currently following established medical protocols. They are working closely with relevant authorities to determine the exact cause of death.
In response to the emotional shock across the campus, OAU is launching several support measures:
- Counseling Services: The university is activating support systems for students and staff affected by the loss.
- Community Solidarity: Officials have called for calm, urging the “Great Ife” community to show empathy and solidarity.
- Family Outreach: The University remains in close contact with the bereaved family to offer support.
A Community in Mourning
Timilehin Toromade (Matriculation Number: CLI/2022/133) was a valued member of the College of Health Sciences. His untimely death has left a significant void among his classmates and peers.
As a result, the University has requested prayers for the family as they navigate this difficult time.
