UN Condemns Abduction of Over 20 Schoolgirls in Kebbi State

UNICEF

The United Nations has issued a strong condemnation following the abduction of more than 20 students from a boarding school in Kebbi State, northwest Nigeria. The global body has issued an urgent call for the “swift release” of the captives.

The attack took place before dawn on Monday at the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the town of Maga.

Deadly Raid and Ongoing Search

According to local police accounts, armed assailants gained entry to the school premises by scaling the perimeter fence. A confrontation ensued, with reports of an exchange of gunfire between the attackers and police officers.

Tragically, one staff member was killed during the raid before the gunmen managed to seize the students.

Search and rescue operations were launched immediately. Local hunters have mobilized to support security forces, combing the forests surrounding the school in an effort to locate the missing girls. In a positive development, reports confirm that at least one of the abducted students has managed to escape and is currently safe.

Calls for Accountability

Farhan Haq, the UN Deputy Spokesperson, described the abduction as a “tragic incident.” He noted that the event serves as a stark reminder of the critical necessity to protect educational institutions, children, and the personnel dedicated to their learning.

UNICEF has also responded to the crisis, demanding that the perpetrators be held accountable under both national and international laws.

Security Vulnerabilities in Schools

The abduction highlights the persistent threat violence poses to education in Nigeria. Attacks on schools continue to act as a major deterrent to learning in the region.

Data released by UNICEF last year underscored the vulnerability of these institutions. The report revealed that across 10 states, only 37 percent of schools are equipped with early warning systems designed to detect threats such as armed attacks and violence.
