Akufo-Addo to Lead ECOWAS Election Observer Mission to Benin

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed former Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo-Addo, to lead its election observation mission to Benin ahead of the country’s upcoming presidential poll.

The election, scheduled for April 12, will determine the successor to incumbent President Patrice Talon, who is constitutionally barred from seeking a third term after completing two terms in office.

Talon’s adherence to constitutional limits has been widely praised as a positive signal for democratic governance in West Africa, a region that has faced a wave of military coups and controversial constitutional changes in recent years.

In a statement, ECOWAS described the observer mission as a critical effort to promote transparency, credibility, and stability in the electoral process.

The mission will monitor key aspects of the election, including the conduct of voting, the neutrality of state institutions, and the overall political environment, to ensure the process aligns with international democratic standards.

Meanwhile, attention is already focused on Romuald Wadagni, widely regarded as the frontrunner in the race. The finance minister, seen as President Talon’s preferred successor, is expected to have a strong advantage following the disqualification of the main opposition candidate.

The deployment of the ECOWAS observer team underscores regional efforts to safeguard democracy and ensure a credible transition of power in Benin.
