Guinea Bissau’s President Survives Attempted Coup

Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló survived an attempted coup today, July 26, 2022, in what is being described as a significant threat to the country’s fragile democracy. The coup attempt, which involved armed gunmen attacking the Presidential Palace in Bissau, unfolded during a cabinet meeting attended by top government officials.

Reports from local sources indicate that heavy gunfire was heard in the capital throughout the day, as security forces engaged with the assailants. Despite the intense situation, President Embaló confirmed his safety in a televised address late in the evening. He reassured the nation that the government remains in control and vowed that those responsible for the coup attempt would be brought to justice.

Security forces acted swiftly to suppress the attack, but the incident has left several individuals dead, including members of the president’s security detail and the attackers. While the full extent of the casualties is still being determined, the government has declared a state of emergency and tightened security measures across the capital to prevent further unrest.

The attack is believed to be politically motivated, though no group has claimed responsibility as of now. Guinea-Bissau, a small West African nation with a history of political instability, has experienced multiple coup attempts since gaining independence in 1974. President Embaló, who came into office in 2020, has faced political opposition but remains committed to upholding constitutional rule.

The international community has expressed concern over the situation. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the coup attempt and reaffirmed its support for President Embaló’s government. ECOWAS has called for an emergency meeting to discuss the situation in Guinea-Bissau and to offer assistance in stabilizing the country.

In the streets of Bissau, the atmosphere remains tense as citizens await further developments. While some have expressed relief that the president is unharmed, others are concerned about the potential for more violence in the coming days. The government has urged calm and cooperation from the public as investigations into the coup attempt continue.
