Prominent opposition parties and political figures in Nigeria are reportedly exploring the possibility of forming a “Granite Alliance” to present a unified front against the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections. The initiative gained momentum following a declaration by Segun Sowunmi, a former Ogun State governorship aspirant, who unveiled the National Opposition Movement (NOM) on November 25, 2024.

Speaking at the unveiling in Abuja, Sowunmi criticized existing opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for failing to provide effective resistance to the APC-led government. According to him, Nigeria’s democracy is at risk without a strong and credible opposition capable of holding the ruling party accountable. He described the NOM as a platform to unite political stakeholders committed to rescuing the country’s democracy.

Sowunmi emphasized that the movement’s primary goal is to dislodge the APC from power in 2027. He outlined plans to engage with other opposition parties, civil society groups, and individuals passionate about promoting good governance. “We need a formidable political alliance to salvage Nigeria from the grip of incompetence,” he said.

The NOM’s launch comes as talks about opposition parties forming a coalition intensify. Insiders indicate that the proposed Granite Alliance could serve as a strategic platform for consolidating resources, ideas, and support ahead of the elections. The coalition aims to address longstanding issues, including economic challenges, security concerns, and governance reforms.

However, the initiative faces significant hurdles, including distrust among opposition leaders and historical rivalries. Analysts note that the success of such alliances in the past has been hampered by internal disagreements and a lack of clear direction.

Despite these challenges, Sowunmi remains optimistic. He called on opposition members to set aside personal ambitions and work collectively to challenge the APC’s dominance. “Nigeria cannot afford another term of economic stagnation and insecurity. We must act decisively now,” he stated.

The APC, on its part, has dismissed the development, with party officials describing the efforts as disorganized and lacking substance. They maintain confidence in their record of governance and believe that the electorate will reaffirm their mandate in 2027.

The unfolding dynamics signal an intense political season as Nigeria inches closer to the elections. Whether the NOM and the proposed Granite Alliance can gain traction remains to be seen.
