Amid ongoing leadership challenges within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum is poised to retain his position as Acting National Chairman. This follows extensive consultations involving the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and state chairmen.

Reports indicate that party leaders have reached a consensus to maintain stability within the party by allowing Damagum to remain in office until further notice. The move comes as the PDP faces internal disagreements and preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Damagum, who assumed office in March 2023, has received the backing of key stakeholders, including state chairmen. Speaking after a meeting with the NWC, the chairmen expressed their confidence in his ability to navigate the party through its current challenges. They emphasized that unity and cohesion are critical to the party’s electoral success in the coming years.

National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, addressing reporters, dismissed rumors of a leadership crisis, stating that the party is focused on addressing issues constructively. He highlighted Damagum’s steady leadership, which has been instrumental in resolving disputes and fostering reconciliation among aggrieved members.

The PDP’s internal issues stem from its defeat in the 2023 presidential election and subsequent court rulings upholding the results. This has led to calls for leadership reforms and a renewed strategy to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures.

Analysts believe that Damagum’s continued tenure is part of a strategic effort to maintain continuity and avoid further disruption within the party. His leadership style has been praised for prioritizing dialogue and inclusivity, qualities deemed essential for unifying the party ahead of future elections.

Meanwhile, the PDP has announced plans for a national retreat to review its performance in the 2023 elections and chart a roadmap for the 2027 polls. Stakeholders hope the retreat will address lingering grievances and foster collaboration among party members.

As the PDP navigates its current challenges, Damagum’s steady hand appears to be a unifying force, ensuring the party remains focused on its objectives and political relevance.
