President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Ndidi Nwakuche as the Acting Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). This announcement follows the retirement of the former Comptroller-General, Haliru Nababa, who served in the position until December 12, 2024.

The appointment of Nwakuche marks a significant leadership transition for the NCoS. As the acting Comptroller-General, Nwakuche is tasked with steering the correctional service towards achieving improved operations, including inmate welfare, security, and rehabilitation.

Nwakuche’s tenure as acting CG begins immediately, and he is expected to oversee critical reforms within the system. His appointment underscores President Tinubu’s focus on strengthening Nigeria’s correctional facilities to align with global best practices.

During his tenure, Haliru Nababa implemented several reforms aimed at enhancing the capacity of correctional facilities across Nigeria. These included improving security measures to curb jailbreaks, providing better training for correctional officers, and introducing rehabilitation programs for inmates. Nababa’s leadership faced numerous challenges, including overcrowding in prisons and security threats, but his efforts have been credited with setting a foundation for further improvements.

Nwakuche’s appointment comes at a time when the Nigerian Correctional Service is undergoing critical reforms. Stakeholders expect him to address pressing issues such as overcrowded facilities, inadequate funding, and the need for improved inmate rehabilitation programs. His leadership will also be pivotal in continuing efforts to reduce incidents of jailbreaks, which have plagued correctional facilities in recent years.

President Tinubu has emphasized his administration’s commitment to reforming the criminal justice system, with the correctional service being a key component. Nwakuche’s appointment aligns with the broader vision of enhancing security and fostering a more rehabilitative approach to incarceration. The acting CG is expected to work closely with other agencies to ensure a seamless and impactful reform process.

As Ndidi Nwakuche takes the reins, attention will be on how effectively he can implement reforms and address systemic challenges within the correctional service. His ability to continue the progress made by his predecessor and introduce new strategies will determine the success of his tenure.
