Tragedy struck in Abuja on Sunday as an explosion at an Islamiyyah school in the Bwari Area Council claimed the lives of two students and left at least four others injured. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting swift action from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.

The explosion, which occurred during a class session, was reportedly caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of chaos as the blast tore through the classroom, leaving several students critically injured. Emergency responders quickly evacuated the victims to a nearby hospital, where two succumbed to their injuries.

FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the arrest of the school proprietor in connection with the incident. Preliminary investigations suggest the IED may have been inadvertently brought into the school premises by a student. However, the exact circumstances leading to the explosion remain under investigation.

Residents of the area expressed their outrage and sorrow, calling for stricter measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. “This is heartbreaking. Schools should be safe havens for children, not places where they lose their lives,” a local resident lamented.

Authorities have since cordoned off the school to facilitate ongoing investigations. Security operatives are working to determine the source of the explosive device and ascertain whether there are broader security implications.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, Haruna Garba, assured the public that all necessary resources are being deployed to uncover the truth and bring any responsible parties to justice. He further called on parents, schools, and communities to exercise vigilance and report suspicious activities promptly.

This incident has reignited concerns over safety in educational institutions across Nigeria, particularly in regions where insecurity remains a pressing issue. Advocacy groups have called for increased security measures in schools, including routine inspections and heightened surveillance, to protect students and staff.

As the community mourns the lives lost, many are left questioning how a device of such lethality found its way into a school. The tragic event underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to prevent future occurrences and ensure the safety of children in learning environments.
