AFCON 2025: Nigeria Eyes Perfect Record in Group Finale

NIGERIA

The Super Eagles of Nigeria face Uganda today, Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at the Complexe Sportif de Fès. Although Nigeria has already secured a spot in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) knockout stages, they are not slowing down. As Group C winners, the team now aims to finish the opening phase with a perfect three-match winning streak.

Nigeria’s campaign has been dominant thus far. They opened the tournament with a 2–1 win over Tanzania. Following that, they secured a high-scoring 3–2 victory against Tunisia. These results placed Nigeria at the top of Group C with six points. Consequently, they are unshakeable at the summit regardless of today’s result.

Strategy: Squad Rotation and Risk Management

Head coach Éric Chelle has hinted at a “surprising” starting eleven for this afternoon’s match. Because qualification is already guaranteed, the coaching staff is focusing on managing player fitness and disciplinary records.

Key tactical considerations for the Super Eagles include:

  • Yellow Card Risks: Several major stars are one booking away from a suspension. This list includes Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Semi Ajayi, and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. Therefore, they are expected to rest to remain available for the Round of 16.
  • Testing Squad Depth: Coach Chelle will likely give minutes to bench players. Specifically, Francis Uzoho, Moses Simon, and Paul Onuachu are expected to start.
  • Injury Management: Stanley Nwabali (knee) and Frank Onyeka (ankle) are nursing minor knocks. As a result, the medical team is unlikely to risk them in a non-essential match.

Uganda’s Desperate Fight for Survival

While Nigeria plays for momentum, Uganda enters this match in a “must-win” scenario. Under coach Paul Put, the “Cranes” have struggled to find their rhythm. Currently, they have just one point following a draw with Tanzania and a loss to Tunisia.

To keep their AFCON dreams alive, Uganda must defeat the Super Eagles. Furthermore, they need other group results to go in their favor. Despite the steep challenge, Coach Put remains optimistic. He recently noted that “in football, everything is possible.”
