Newcastle United striker Yoane Wissa will miss the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. The Democratic Republic of Congo omitted him from their squad, confirming he will not play in the tournament in Morocco.
The 29-year-old forward completed a high-profile move to St James’ Park recently. He joined for approximately £55 million on transfer deadline day. However, he has faced a frustrating start to his tenure at the club.
Wissa has not featured for Newcastle since September 9. He sustained an injury during a World Cup qualifier against Senegal and has been sidelined since.
Too Late for Selection
The forward has recently resumed training. Despite this progress, national team officials confirmed that his recovery came too late. His timeline did not align with the squad submission deadline. Therefore, they could not include him in the roster.
Lack of match fitness has severely disrupted Wissa’s season. His only two competitive appearances this campaign were for DR Congo during the September international break.
Prior to his move to the Champions League-competing Magpies, he had limited involvement with his former club, Brentford. He missed their entire pre-season. Additionally, he sat out three Premier League fixtures while pushing for a transfer.
Premier League Contingent
While Wissa misses out, the DR Congo squad features a strong presence of English-based talent.
Officials announced the final list on Monday evening. The selection includes Sunderland duo Arthur Masuaku and Noah Sadiki. West Ham defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Burnley’s Axel Tuanzebe also made the cut.
