Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim delivered a brutal verdict on his squad following a shock defeat to Everton. The manager admitted his side “deserved to lose” the Premier League clash at Old Trafford.
The match took a bizarre turn early on. Everton played with 10 men for more than 70 minutes after Idrissa Gueye was sent off for slapping his own teammate, Michael Keane. Despite this advantage, United failed to secure a result.
“We Were Not Ready”
Speaking after the match, Amorim refused to make excuses. He criticized his team’s lack of intensity and quality.
“They were the better team. We deserved to lose,” Amorim stated frankly. “Twenty minutes in the game, red card for the opponent. We need to win this game no matter what.”
The Portuguese coach expressed disappointment that the players could not match the energy of the stadium.
“Old Trafford was there saying ‘we are all here to give a big step up’,” he said. “I felt that we were not ready.”
A Reality Check
The loss is a significant setback for the Red Devils. The club spent £250 million in the summer to rebuild the squad. This investment aimed to fix the issues that led to a disastrous 15th-place finish last season.
However, Amorim dismissed the recent praise surrounding the team’s improvement.
“I’m always saying the same things,” he warned. “We are not even near what we’re supposed to be in this club.”
Mid-Table Battle
The defeat leaves Manchester United in 10th place. They are stuck in a tight mid-table group alongside Tottenham, Everton, and Liverpool.
Despite the poor result, the league remains congested. United sits just three points off the top four. To reach those spots, however, they must find consistency quickly.
