British heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua has survived a serious car crash in Nigeria. While the former world champion sustained only minor injuries, officials confirmed that the accident tragically claimed the lives of two other individuals.
The incident occurred on Monday morning, December 29, 2025, in the Sagamu region of Ogun State. This area holds significant importance for Joshua, as it is the home of his ancestral roots.
Details of the High-Speed Collision
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the accident involved a Lexus SUV carrying five adult males. Preliminary reports suggest the vehicle was traveling at a high speed while attempting to overtake another car.
During the maneuver, the driver reportedly lost control. This caused the SUV to veer off the highway and collide with a stationary truck parked along the shoulder.
The aftermath of the crash included:
- Casualties: Two of the five passengers died instantly at the scene.
- Survivors: Anthony Joshua was rescued with minor injuries, while two other occupants emerged unhurt.
- Medical Condition: Joshua was transported to a nearby hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
Eyewitness Accounts and Scene Footage
Eyewitness Adeniyi Orojo reported that the boxer was seated in the rear of the Lexus during the impact. He noted that Joshua’s security team was following in a separate vehicle, a Pajero, which was not involved in the collision.
Visuals circulating on social media show the severe damage to the vehicle. In several videos, a shirtless Joshua is seen surrounded by broken glass. He appeared visibly shaken and was grimacing while being assisted out of the wreckage by bystanders and officials.
Police Launch Formal Investigation
The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the details and launched a full investigation. Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo stated that while the boxer is “fine,” authorities are determined to find the exact cause of the fatal crash.
“Our officers are currently at the medical facility to verify the identities of all victims and monitor the recovery of those injured,” a police spokesperson added.
Interestingly, just an hour before the accident, Joshua shared a video on Instagram showing him playing table tennis. The boxer has been in Nigeria following his high-profile bout against Jake Paul on December 19.
