Former Nigeria Super Eagles striker, Anthony Ujah, has officially retired from professional football at the age of 34.

He shared the announcement on Instagram today, Friday, bringing an emotional close to a career spanning more than 15 years.

Ujah’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable journey in both club and international football.

Career Highlights and Club Achievements

Anthony Ujah spent the majority of his career playing in Germany, gaining fame with FC Köln. He played a key role in returning the club to the Bundesliga and became a fan favorite, notably celebrating goals alongside the club’s mascot.

Throughout his career, Ujah scored 113 goals, and the highlight remains winning the German 2. Bundesliga title in 2014.

Recently, Ujah had been without a club after leaving Bulgarian side Botev Plovdiv in July.

His final season was affected by a knee injury, which limited him to just five appearances and two goals while missing 40 matches. Despite these challenges, Ujah’s impact on the pitch remained undeniable.

Heartfelt Farewell to Football

In his Instagram post, Ujah expressed deep gratitude to the clubs, coaches, and teammates who supported him:

“Today, I make the toughest decision of my life, retiring from professional football. I want to thank every club I have played for, every coach who believed in me, and every teammate who fought beside me on the pitch. Together, we’ve shared victories and defeats that taught me resilience.”

He continued:

“Fulfilling a childhood dream of playing for my country is one I will always cherish. Football has been my passion, my identity, my home.

I will miss the emotions, the celebrations, the dressing room laughter, and even the hard days. A new chapter begins, but my love for football will never end.”

International Career with the Super Eagles

Ujah earned seven caps for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, though he did not score internationally. Nevertheless, his consistent performances at club level, particularly in Germany, cement his status as one of Nigeria’s notable forwards.

Legacy and Influence

Anthony Ujah leaves behind a lasting legacy. His career reflects dedication, resilience, and passion for football. Young Nigerian players can look up to his journey as an example of hard work, determination, and professional excellence.
