Botswana

President Duma Gideon Boko has declared September 29, 2025, a public holiday to honor Botswana’s first-ever gold medal at the World Athletics Championships.

The celebration, just before the nation’s Independence Day on September 30, marks a historic moment for the country.

Praise for Athletes

Speaking at the United Nations’ 80th General Assembly in New York, Boko praised the athletes’ dedication and perseverance. He highlighted their hard work and determination as key to this landmark achievement.

Gold in Tokyo

Botswana’s 4x400m relay team—Lee Bhekempilo Eppie, Letsile Tebogo, Bayapo Ndori, and Busang Collen Kebinatshipi—secured the gold in a rain-drenched race in Tokyo.

They outran the U.S., who took silver, and South Africa, who claimed bronze, in a thrilling finish.

National Pride Soars

The victory has sparked widespread excitement, placing Botswana in the global sports spotlight. The holiday aims to unite the nation in celebrating this historic milestone.
