The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approved a major change for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). National teams can now register up to 27 players for the tournament.
This new rule gives coaches more flexibility. It helps them manage physical demands during the competition. Furthermore, the larger squad offers a buffer against injuries and suspensions in a busy calendar.
The Financial Caveat
Although the squad limit is higher, financial rules remain strict. CAF clarified that it will only cover expenses for a standard 23-man squad.
This coverage includes travel, accommodation, and logistics. Consequently, federations must fund the four additional players independently if they choose to bring them.
Super Eagles Prepare for Camp
The tournament runs from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. Therefore, preparations in the Nigerian camp are intensifying.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will release a provisional squad list soon. Reports suggest Head Coach Eric Chelle has submitted a 55-man preliminary roster.
This list will eventually be trimmed to the final selection. However, several new faces may earn a spot in the training camp. The camp opens on Monday, December 8. It will feature warm-up friendlies before the team departs for North Africa.
Group C Battle Plan
Nigeria is in Group C. They face a competitive run of fixtures against Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania.
