Efe Ajagba Suffers First Career Loss in Heavyweight BoxingNigerian heavyweight boxer Efe Ajagba suffered his first professional career loss on October 9, 2021, in a 10-round unanimous decision against Cuban fighter Frank Sánchez. The bout, which took place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, was part of the undercard for the highly anticipated Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder III fight.

Ajagba, who entered the ring with a perfect 15-0 record, was outboxed by Sánchez from the opening bell. The Cuban, known for his speed and movement, controlled the pace of the fight, using his superior footwork to avoid Ajagba’s power punches. Despite a few moments of aggression from Ajagba, Sánchez’s tactical approach kept him in control throughout the contest.

The judges scored the fight 98-91, 98-91, and 97-92, all in favor of Sánchez, giving him a decisive victory. The only knockdown of the fight occurred in the seventh round when Ajagba was caught with a well-timed right hand, sending him to the canvas. Although Ajagba recovered and continued fighting, he struggled to break through Sánchez’s defense for the remainder of the bout.

Ajagba’s defeat marks a major turning point in his professional career. Known for his knockout power, with 12 of his 15 wins coming via knockout, this was the first time Ajagba was unable to find success with his signature heavy punches. However, the 27-year-old Nigerian remained composed after the loss, acknowledging the need to improve and promising to come back stronger.

Frank Sánchez, with the victory, extended his unbeaten record to 19-0 and solidified his position as a rising contender in the heavyweight division. Speaking after the fight, Sánchez credited his team’s game plan and his ability to stay disciplined against Ajagba’s power.

This loss may serve as a learning experience for Ajagba, who is still considered one of the top prospects in heavyweight boxing. His fans in Nigeria and around the world remain optimistic about his future, as he continues to grow and adapt in the competitive heavyweight landscape.
