Egypt to Host 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations After Côte d’Ivoire Withdrawal
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced Egypt as the new host for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This decision follows Côte d’Ivoire’s unexpected withdrawal from hosting duties just a month before the tournament’s commencement.
Côte d’Ivoire’s Withdrawal and Egypt’s Appointment
Initially slated to take place in Côte d’Ivoire from April 26 to May 18, the U-20 AFCON faced uncertainty when the West African nation pulled out due to unforeseen circumstances. In response, CAF swiftly appointed Egypt as the replacement host, rescheduling the tournament’s start date to April 27.

Egypt’s Readiness to Host the Tournament
Egypt is no stranger to hosting major football events, having successfully organized the previous edition of the U-20 AFCON in 2023. Their proven infrastructure and experience make them well-equipped to ensure the smooth execution of the upcoming tournament.
Tournament Structure and Qualification
The competition will feature 12 teams divided into groups, with the top two teams from each group automatically advancing to the knockout stages. Additionally, the two best third-placed teams will secure quarter-final spots. Notably, the four semi-finalists will earn qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, providing an added incentive for teams to perform at their best.
Egypt’s prompt assumption of hosting responsibilities underscores CAF’s commitment to ensuring the continuity and success of its tournaments, even in the face of unforeseen challenges.
