FIFA has penalized the South African Football Association (SAFA) for using midfielder Teboho Mokoena in a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho on March 21, 2025.

Mokoena was ineligible, violating FIFA rules.

Breach Details

SAFA broke Article 19 of FIFA’s Disciplinary Code and Article 14 of the 2026 World Cup preliminary regulations. As a result, South Africa forfeits the match, with Lesotho awarded a 3-0 victory.

Penalties Imposed

FIFA fined SAFA 10,000 Swiss francs (about £9,000) and issued Mokoena a warning. The decision was shared with both parties on September 29, 2025.

Appeal Option

SAFA has 10 days to request a detailed explanation of the ruling. If requested, FIFA will publish it online. The decision can also be appealed to the FIFA Appeal Committee.

Why It Matters

The sanction impacts South Africa’s World Cup qualifying campaign, shifting standings in Lesotho’s favor. It highlights the importance of strict eligibility checks in international competitions.

What’s Next

SAFA must decide whether to appeal or accept the penalty. The outcome could affect their strategy for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in 2025.
