CONGO

The air in Rabat, Morocco, was thick with tension on Sunday night. For Nigeria and Congo, the final playoff match of African qualifying was a decisive battle. The prize? A ticket to the intercontinental stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles struck early, igniting hope across Nigeria. Frank Onyeka put the team ahead just three minutes into the game. However, Congo quickly leveled the score in the 32nd minute through Mechak Elia. The tightly contested match remained locked at 1–1, forcing the clash into extra time.

A major storyline emerged when Nigerian star striker Victor Osimhen, the leading scorer in the UEFA Champions League, was substituted at halftime. His early exit left fans questioning the team’s attacking power in the crucial final period.

The Penalty Drama

The full 120 minutes could not separate the two sides, leading to the ultimate football drama: a penalty shootout.

The Congolese team, led by Chancel Mbemba, held their nerve under extreme pressure. Mbemba, already a hero for scoring the game-winning goal against Cameroon on Thursday, stepped up again.

He successfully converted the decisive spot kick, sealing a 4–3 shootout victory for Congo. This win simultaneously ended Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes.

The Road Ahead

Congo’s dramatic win secures their spot in FIFA’s six-team intercontinental playoff tournament scheduled for March 2026. This tournament will ultimately send two nations forward to the final stage of the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Congo joins the list of African nations that have already qualified directly for the World Cup, including Algeria, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia.
