José Riveiro Exits Orlando Pirates

The Spanish coach José Riveiro has parted ways with South African club Orlando Pirates, the team confirmed on Monday, May 12, 2025, fueling speculation of a move to Egyptian giants Al Ahly ahead of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. The early release from his contract marks the end of a nearly three-year tenure with the Pirates, during which he left a significant mark on the club.

A Mutual Departure

Orlando Pirates Chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza revealed that Riveiro requested an early release from his contract, originally set to expire in June 2025, after securing an opportunity with a new club. “José approached us a few weeks ago with a request to be released from his contract ahead of schedule, having signed with a new club,” Khoza said in a statement. While the Pirates did not confirm Al Ahly as Riveiro’s next destination, reports linking him to the Cairo-based club have intensified.

Riveiro’s Legacy at Orlando Pirates

Since joining Orlando Pirates in 2022, Riveiro led the team to notable achievements, including a second-place finish in the 2023 South African Premiership and a runner-up spot in the 2025 Nedbank Cup. “His contribution since joining the Club has been immense. We learned a lot from him, and he learned a lot from us,” Khoza added, praising the Spaniard’s impact on and off the field.

Gratitude from the Coach

In his farewell statement, Riveiro expressed deep appreciation for his time at Orlando Pirates. “I want to express my sincere appreciation to Orlando Pirates for allowing me the opportunity to leave before the end of my contract,” he said. The 47-year-old coach also extended thanks to the club’s players, staff, and passionate supporters for their support during his tenure.

Al Ahly and the Club World Cup

Riveiro’s rumored move to Al Ahly comes at a pivotal time, with the Egyptian powerhouse preparing for the expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, set to take place in the United States in June. Al Ahly, one of Africa’s most decorated clubs, is reportedly seeking Riveiro’s tactical expertise to bolster their campaign on the global stage. If confirmed, the move would mark a significant step in Riveiro’s coaching career.

What’s Next for Orlando Pirates?

With Riveiro’s departure, Orlando Pirates face the task of appointing a new head coach to build on his achievements. The club has not yet announced an interim or permanent replacement, but fans are eager to see who will lead the team into the next chapter. Meanwhile, Riveiro’s potential arrival at Al Ahly has sparked excitement among African football enthusiasts, setting the stage for a high-profile transition.
