Kylian Mbappé Wins $61 Million Dispute Against PSG Over Unpaid Wages

Kylian Mbappé

Kylian Mbappé, one of football’s biggest stars, has won a significant legal victory against his former club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

The French league’s legal commission ruled that PSG must pay him €55 million ($61 million) in unpaid wages. This decision concludes a bitter and highly publicized dispute between the player and the club over several months.

Background of the Dispute

The conflict began in the summer of 2023, following a period of growing tension between Mbappé and PSG. Despite signing a contract extension in 2022 that was hailed as the most lucrative in the club’s history, relations soured.

A key issue was the club’s failure to meet certain promises made to Mbappé, including bringing in high-profile players to strengthen the squad. Frustrated by the club’s actions, Mbappé announced in June 2023 that he would not extend his contract beyond 2024, a decision that took PSG by surprise.

This announcement effectively put PSG in a difficult position, as they faced the prospect of losing one of their best players for free if they didn’t sell him during the summer transfer window.

In response, PSG made a series of dramatic moves, including excluding Mbappé from their preseason tour and forcing him to train with fringe players. This exclusion continued into the start of the 2023-24 season, with PSG leaving Mbappé out of their opening league match(

The Legal Dispute

At the heart of the dispute was Mbappé’s claim that PSG failed to pay him three months’ worth of salary and a large portion of a loyalty bonus.

Loyalty bonuses are common in high-profile football contracts, rewarding players for staying with their club for a certain period. PSG, however, argued that Mbappé had forfeited his right to this bonus as part of an agreement made during his temporary exclusion from the squad.

According to PSG, Mbappé had agreed to forgo certain bonuses in exchange for being reintegrated into the team(

Despite these claims, the French league’s legal commission sided with Mbappé. The commission ruled that PSG owed him the full amount of €55 million, including the unpaid wages and loyalty bonus.

This ruling came after a failed mediation between the two sides, and it marked a significant win for Mbappé as he prepared to move on to Real Madrid.

PSG’s Response

PSG has not accepted the ruling quietly. In a statement released after the decision, the club expressed their intent to contest the ruling in another legal forum.

PSG argued that the agreement regarding Mbappé’s exclusion and eventual reintegration into the team meant that the player had agreed to give up part of his salary and bonuses. They believe that this agreement should be honored in court.

The club also pointed out that the dispute stemmed from a broader breakdown in their relationship with Mbappé. While they had hoped to keep the forward as the face of their project, the tensions from unfulfilled promises and disagreements about the direction of the club made the situation unsustainable.

Despite their efforts to keep him, Mbappé made it clear that he would not remain beyond his current contract, which left PSG scrambling to find a solution.

The Road Ahead

While Mbappé has already moved on from PSG, joining Real Madrid in 2024 on a free transfer, the legal dispute is far from over. PSG is determined to fight the ruling, and the case may end up in court.

In summary, the legal ruling in favor of Mbappé is a significant development in his ongoing dispute with PSG. While the French league’s legal commission has ordered the payment of €55 million, the case is far from over as PSG prepares for further legal battles.

This saga is a reminder of the complex financial dealings in football, particularly when superstar players are involved.
