The legal battle between celebrated French forward Kylian Mbappé and his former club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), escalated significantly on Monday.
Both parties are now pursuing massive financial claims against one another in an industrial court examining the dispute over alleged unpaid wages and damages.
The total amount requested by the player and the club exceeds €700 million (approximately$815 million).
Player’s Demand: Compensation for Unfair Dismissal
Mbappé, who did not attend the court hearing, is now seeking a total amount exceeding €260 million from PSG. Initially, the dispute centered on €55 million $63million in claimed unpaid wages. The player’s expanded claim argues that his previous fixed-term contract should be legally reclassified as a permanent employment contract.
Such a reclassification would trigger a cascading claim for compensation that includes:
- Unpaid wages and bonuses.
- Severance pay and compensation for alleged unfair dismissal.
- Damages related to moral harassment and breaches of the club’s duty of good faith.
The player’s advisors maintained that Mbappé “is not asking for anything beyond what the law provides; he is simply seeking the enforcement of his legal rights, as any employee would.”
Club’s Counterclaim: Breaches and Lost Opportunity
PSG has retaliated by pursuing a total of €440 million from the striker. This colossal figure includes a claim for €180 million for “loss of opportunity.”
This claim stems from the club’s inability to complete a lucrative transfer after Mbappé declined a €300million offer from the Saudi club Al-Hilal in July 2023, choosing instead to leave as a free agent.
The club stated it also seeks compensation for alleged breaches of good faith during negotiations and contract performance, as well as for reputational and image damage.
The Breakdown of Trust
The dispute is rooted in Mbappé’s decision not to exercise an option for an extra year when he signed a highly lucrative contract with PSG in 2022.
A year later, Mbappé informed the club he would not extend his deal. With his contract in its final year, PSG faced losing their star—who had joined from Monaco for €180 million in 2017 for no fee.
PSG alleges that when Mbappé was temporarily sidelined before the 2023-24 season, there was a verbal arrangement for him to waive certain bonuses in return for his return to the team. The club presented evidence alleging the player acted disloyally by concealing his decision not to extend for nearly 11 months.
This, PSG argues, deprived them of any chance to arrange a transfer. PSG further claimed that the player subsequently challenged a deal made in August 2023 that reduced his salary to protect the club’s financial stability if he left for free. Mbappé’s representatives countered that the club never provided proof of any agreement to waive payments.
The player’s camp previously accused the club of moral harassment, specifically denouncing the “lofting” he allegedly endured. This French term describes the practice of isolating a player from the main squad.
PSG strongly denied any accusations of harassment or pressure. They noted that the player participated in over 94% of official matches during the 2023-24 season and confirmed that all sporting decisions were made by the coach (who led the team to the Champions League victory that year).
A decision from the court is expected next month.
