In the 74th minute, Messi weaved through defenders and chipped Freese for a 2-0 lead. Luis Suarez, back from a three-game ban, scored a penalty, and Messi sealed the win with an angled shot in the 86th.

NYCFC’s Missed Chances

Aiden O’Neill’s long shot was blocked, and Nicolas Fernandez hit the post. Freese stopped a Messi attempt, but NYCFC couldn’t convert their chances.

They remain contenders for the Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record.
