Lionel-Messi-Inter-Miami

On September 24, 2025, Lionel Messi led Inter Miami to a 4-0 victory against New York City FC, securing a spot in the MLS Cup playoffs.

Messi scored two goals and provided an assist, boosting his league-leading tally to 24 goals in 23 matches, surpassing LAFC’s Denis Bouanga by two.

Key Moments

At City Field, a rain-soaked baseball stadium, Inter Miami took the lead in the 43rd minute. Sergio Busquets passed to Messi, who set up Baltazar Rodriguez for a low shot past NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese.

In the 74th minute, Messi weaved through defenders and chipped Freese for a 2-0 lead. Luis Suarez, back from a three-game ban, scored a penalty, and Messi sealed the win with an angled shot in the 86th.

NYCFC’s Missed Chances

NYCFC had early opportunities. Thiago Martins’ header was saved by Inter’s Oscar Ustari in the 21st minute.

Aiden O’Neill’s long shot was blocked, and Nicolas Fernandez hit the post. Freese stopped a Messi attempt, but NYCFC couldn’t convert their chances.

Team Standings

Inter Miami sits third in the Eastern Conference, five points behind leaders Philadelphia with two games in hand.

They remain contenders for the Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record.

Messi’s Impact

Messi, a top candidate for the 2025 MLS MVP, has delivered a goal and an assist in three straight games. His second playoff run with Inter Miami highlights his ongoing dominance.

Suarez’s Return

Luis Suarez’s penalty goal marked his comeback after a ban for an incident in the Leagues Cup final, adding strength to Miami’s attack.

Looking Ahead

With Messi in top form, Inter Miami aims to make a deep playoff run and compete for the MLS Cup, building on their commanding performance against NYCFC.
