A high-ranking official of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, will receive his outstanding salary arrears shortly. This assurance comes as the national team intensifies preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Reports indicate that Chelle is owed three months of salary and bonuses leading up to the tournament. The competition runs from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
NFF Explains Payment Delays
Responding to concerns regarding unpaid wages, an NFF insider clarified the situation. The official stated that the payment process has been initiated but is currently awaiting final financial clearance, known as “cash backing”.
“The coach came to see us, and we explained the processes,” the official stated. “His money will be paid. We have paid him in advance before, and this time, we are waiting for cash backing from finance. The money on paper has been paid, and the coach is aware”.
The official urged patience, noting that previous instances where the coach was paid months in advance were not publicized. Previously, the National Sports Commission facilitated salary payments through a support group to cover wages until October, giving the NFF time to secure long-term funding.
Camp Opens and Squad Deadline
The Super Eagles’ camp is scheduled to open today, Wednesday, December 10, in Egypt. The team has also booked an unofficial pre-tournament friendly against the Pharaohs of Egypt for December 16.
Coach Chelle is expected to submit his final squad list between today and Thursday, December 11. This is the deadline for naming the 28-player rosters allowed for the finals. Clubs are mandated to release players by Monday, December 15.
Tournament Outlook and Schedule
The 2025 AFCON will be Chelle’s third major assignment since his appointment in January. His tenure so far has seen the Eagles miss out on the 2026 World Cup after a penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in the playoffs.
Nigeria will compete in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania. The Eagles are seeking a fourth continental title, having previously won in 1980, 1994, and 2013.
Group C Fixtures:
- Dec 23: Nigeria vs. Tanzania (Fès)
- Dec 27: Nigeria vs. Tunisia (Fès)
- Dec 31: Nigeria vs. Uganda (Fès)
