Lagos Electric

Lagos, Nigeria, made history as the first African city to host the E1 electric boat race. On Sunday, Lagos Lagoon buzzed with excitement.

The E1 Series, a global all-electric powerboat championship, showcased battery-powered RaceBirds.

These hydrofoil boats glide above water, reducing drag and emissions. This eco-friendly event marked a milestone for sustainable racing in Africa.

Team Brazil Claims Victory

Team Brazil secured their first win of the 2025 season. Pilot Ieva Millere-Hagin shared her excitement:

“Winning the E1 electric boat race in Lagos is huge for us. It’s our best result this season!”

Their victory highlighted the competitive spirit and thrilled spectators on the lagoon.

Celebrity Support Fuels E1 Series

Launched in 2024, the E1 Series follows Formula E’s electric racing model. Nine teams, backed by stars like Rafael Nadal, Will Smith, and Didier Drogba, compete in 2025.

“Didier’s passion brought this race to Africa,” said managing director John Williams. Organizers plan to expand to 12 teams and add more races, hoping to return to Lagos.

Boosting Nigeria’s Economy and Pride

The Lagos government estimates the E1 electric boat race could generate $100 million in tourism revenue.

Local attendee Oluwadamilola Osundhin said, “This event proves Nigeria can host major global events.” As the first African nation to stage this race, Nigeria showcased its potential on a world stage.

Global Spotlight on Sustainable Racing

Lagos joined Jeddah, Doha, and Monaco as 2025 E1 Series hosts. The season will end in Miami in November.

This championship promotes eco-friendly innovation and high-speed competition. Nigeria’s successful E1 electric boat race debut inspires sustainable racing worldwide.
