Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has declared Erling Haaland as slightly ahead of Alexander Isak, responding to Liverpool boss Arne Slot’s claim that his new signing could be the world’s premier striker.
Alexander Isak, the Swedish forward, is set to potentially make his Liverpool debut against Burnley on Sunday following a British-record £125 million ($169 million) transfer from Newcastle on the final day of the transfer window.
Slot lauded the 25-year-old’s talents after his initial training session with the Premier League champions. However, Guardiola was quick to defend Haaland’s credentials during a Friday press conference.
Since joining Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, Haaland has scored an impressive 88 goals in 100 Premier League matches, contributing to two league titles, a Champions League, and an FA Cup.
Isak, who transferred to Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022, notched 54 goals in 86 league games, helping the Magpies secure the League Cup last season, ending a 56-year trophy drought.
When asked to compare the two, Guardiola said,
“A little bit above. Isak is a fantastic player, but Erling is exceptional. I wouldn’t trade him for anyone. I know him, and he’s phenomenal.”
He acknowledged Isak’s quality, noting, “Isak must be top-tier given the price paid. Others might mention (Kylian) Mbappé, (Lionel) Messi, or Cristiano (Ronaldo), but Erling is my choice.”
Manchester City’s Challenges
Guardiola will rely on Haaland’s goal-scoring instinct in the upcoming Manchester derby on Sunday, as City look to recover from back-to-back defeats against Tottenham and Brighton. After finishing third last season, the team has faced challenges with injuries and defensive inconsistencies.
Goalkeeper Transition
City recently signed Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain to replace Ederson, who moved to Fenerbahce after eight years. Ederson’s exceptional distribution skills were a hallmark of City’s success, but Guardiola is adapting to Donnarumma’s different strengths.
“I adapt to the players’ qualities. I won’t ask Gigi to do things he’s not comfortable with,”
Guardiola said, praising Donnarumma’s physical presence: “He’s incredibly tall and imposing.”
Guardiola did not confirm whether Donnarumma or James Trafford would start against Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium.
Looking Ahead
Despite a rocky start to the season, Guardiola remains optimistic: “With 10 new players in a few months, we need time to gel. We’re doing many things well, but consistency is key. We’ll get there step by step.”
