The Paris Saint-Germain’s star defender Achraf Hakimi has been crowned the top African player in Ligue 1, earning the prestigious Marc-Vivien Foé award on Sunday, May 11, 2025.

The 26-year-old Moroccan’s pivotal role in PSG’s 13th Ligue 1 title and their journey to the Champions League final solidified his reputation as one of football’s brightest talents.

A Well-Deserved Honor

Hakimi outshone fellow nominees Evann Guessand of Nice, from Ivory Coast, and Senegalese midfielder Habib Diarra of Strasbourg to claim the award.

The award was named in memory of Cameroon’s two-time African champion Marc-Vivien Foé, who tragically passed away on the field in 2003 at age 28.

This marks Hakimi’s second consecutive nomination, underscoring his consistent excellence in French football.

Hakimi’s Stellar Season

The dynamic right-back, known for his speed, versatility, and attacking flair, played a key role in PSG’s dominant Ligue 1 campaign and their deep run in the Champions League.

His contributions on both ends of the pitch have made him a fan favorite and a cornerstone of PSG’s success. “It makes me very proud to see all the work I’ve achieved over the years rewarded with this prize. I’m really happy,” Hakimi told French broadcaster RFI, which presented the award.

A Tribute to a Legend

The Marc-Vivien Foé award, established to honor the late midfielder’s legacy, celebrates African players who excel in Ligue 1 while embodying Foé’s spirit of passion and dedication.

Hakimi’s victory highlights his growing influence in European football and his pride in representing Morocco on the global stage.

A Bright Future Ahead

At just 26, Hakimi’s latest accolade cements his status as one of Africa’s footballing greats. With PSG poised for more silverware and Hakimi’s career trajectory soaring, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how he continues to shape the game.

For now, this award is a testament to his hard work and a proud moment for Moroccan football.
