Sheffield United Reappoints Wilder After Selles Sacking

Sheffield United, a club in the English Championship, made a bold move on Monday. They appointed Chris Wilder for his third stint as manager. This came after dismissing Ruben Selles due to a poor season opening.

The team suffered a heavy 5-0 loss to Ipswich on Friday. That defeat left them at the bottom of the table with no points from five games. They also exited the League Cup against Birmingham.

Selles’ Short Tenure

Ruben Selles took over from Wilder in June. He had managed Southampton and Reading before. Selles signed a three-year contract, but results didn’t improve.

Wilder, now 57, had guided the club to the Championship play-off final. They nearly returned to the Premier League but fell short. He left after that effort.

New Contract and First Game

Wilder has agreed to a deal running until 2027. He will lead the team in their next match against Charlton Athletic on Saturday. This game is in the second tier of English football.

Club’s Statement on the Decision

The board issued a statement explaining the switch. “After a challenging start, we needed to change to steady performances and boost our promotion chances,” they said.

They noted the attempt to introduce a new playing style with high hopes. However, outcomes fell short of goals.

“Chris Wilder brings strong leadership and deep knowledge of Sheffield United. We believe he can rebuild energy, bring the team and fans together, and get the wins we need this season,” the statement added.

Wilder’s Track Record

During his first time at the club, Wilder took Sheffield United to the Premier League in 2019. He was the manager then.

Later, he handled teams like Middlesbrough and Watford. Wilder returned to Bramall Lane in December 2023 for his second spell.
