South Africa’s cricket team, under stand-in captain Aiden Markram, launches its World Test Championship title defense with a two-Test series in Pakistan starting October 12, 2025.

The squad, fresh off a five-wicket victory over Australia at Lord’s in June, faces a tough subcontinental challenge.

Markram Steps Up

With regular captain Temba Bavuma sidelined by a calf injury, Markram leads the team. “Winning the title puts a target on us,” he said at a Monday press conference.

“We aim to reach the final again, but every team will come hard at us.”

Tailored Training for Pakistan

The team trained at Pretoria’s High Performance Centre, focusing on spin-heavy conditions. “We’ve practiced on exaggerated spin nets to prepare for Pakistan’s wickets,” Markram noted.

Low seam and skiddy pitches pose unique challenges, prompting specialized drills.

Series Schedule

The first Test begins in Lahore, followed by the second in Rawalpindi on October 20. After Pakistan, South Africa plays two Tests in India in November, testing their adaptability further.

Strategic Focus

Markram emphasized improving across conditions. “Pakistan’s spin and low seam demand specific preparation,” he said. The team’s training simulates these challenges to build resilience and skill.

Championship Context

The World Test Championship spans two years, ending with a final between the top two teams. South Africa’s title defense hinges on consistent performance, starting with this critical series.

High Expectations

As defending champions, South Africa faces intense competition. Markram remains confident, stating, “The team is ready for the challenge.” Their preparation signals a determined bid to retain the trophy.
