As Nigeria’s Super Eagles regroup for upcoming international competitions, key players and officials have set ambitious targets for both the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Midfielder Alex Iwobi has expressed his determination to help Nigeria clinch the AFCON title, while the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) faces pressure to secure a World Cup ticket. Meanwhile, fresh opportunities are opening up for players like Chuba Akpom and Nathan Tella as the national team prepares for crucial fixtures.

Iwobi, who played a vital role in Nigeria’s AFCON 2024 campaign, has turned his focus to the next edition of the tournament. The Fulham midfielder emphasized the team’s commitment to improving their performance and competing for the continental trophy. He acknowledged the disappointment of past tournaments but stated that the squad is determined to bring success to Nigeria in the upcoming AFCON.

Meanwhile, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, the President of the NFF, has been urged by Shehu Dikko, former Chairman of the League Management Company, to prioritize Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Dikko emphasized that securing a spot at the global tournament should be a top agenda for Nigerian football authorities, given the importance of the competition to the nation’s football legacy. He also called for proper planning and strategic preparations to ensure the team does not miss out on the prestigious event, as they did in 2022.

As preparations intensify, the Super Eagles are also expected to welcome new additions to the squad. Reports indicate that Chelsea’s development team coach, Marko Mitrovic, has opened the doors for Anglo-Nigerian players such as Chuba Akpom and Nathan Tella to join the national team setup. Their potential inclusion could strengthen the squad as Nigeria gears up for AFCON qualifiers and World Cup qualification matches.

The team is set to face Rwanda in an upcoming fixture, marking an important test as they build momentum for future tournaments. The NFF and coaching staff are working on assembling the best possible squad, ensuring that both experienced players and fresh talents are given opportunities to contribute to Nigeria’s football ambitions.

With high expectations from fans and stakeholders, the Super Eagles’ journey towards AFCON 2025 and the 2026 World Cup will be closely watched. The focus remains on achieving success on both fronts and reaffirming Nigeria’s status as a football powerhouse on the continent and the global stage.
