Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle Predicts Second-Place Finish in Group C
Nigeria’s Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has expressed disappointment after his team’s 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday. Despite dropping two crucial points, Chelle remains hopeful that Nigeria can still finish as the second-best team in Group C.
Super Eagles Drop Crucial Points in 1-1 Draw
Playing at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, the Super Eagles took the lead through a Victor Osimhen header but conceded a 90th-minute equalizer from Tawanda Chirewa, allowing Zimbabwe to snatch a point.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Chelle admitted his frustration, saying:
“I am so disappointed for my players, for the country, because we couldn’t do it (win against Zimbabwe). I don’t know the result of the other game, but I know we can go as second best.”
Nigeria’s Position in Group C Standings
Following the draw, Nigeria currently sits in fourth place with seven points in Group C, trailing behind:
- South Africa – 13 points
- Benin Republic – 10 points
- Rwanda – 10 points
With only a few games left in the qualifiers, the Super Eagles will need a strong comeback to secure one of the qualification spots for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
